Art in the Yard
Outside Inside: Textures and Abstractions
JUNE 3–12, 2022
The second edition of the Art in the Yard outdoor art series, created in collaboration with SMA I Stephen Moser Architects featured a re-imagined outdoor design to reflect the exhibition focus, as well as the blurring of boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces, a phenomenon that has become part of everyone’s lives in the time of Covid.
The creative design was tailored to the architecture of the 1880’s Larchmont Manor historic home to create a seamless flow between the outdoor art spaces, including the wrap-front front porch gallery, 20ft by 60ft outdoor tent, outdoor sculpture and murals, and curated rooms on the first floor of the home. A centerpiece of the design is a diaphanous scrim material, that wraps around the porch.
Another year of the Covid pandemic has curtailed our ability to connect and satisfy the desire to touch. As a response, Founder/Curator Brooke Molinaroli has been personally drawn to tactile artwork over the last year. Texture in art can be actual, simulated, abstract, or invented. Even if a surface is smooth, the work can evoke a sense of texture through illusion, depth, perspective, or technique. The exhibition will feature 20 museum-quality contemporary artists, including many that have not previously been shown by BAM Art.
Ky Anderson, Frances Ashforth, Daniel Carello, Emma Childs, Kevin Francis, Rose Frisenda, Sarah Hinckley, Hue Thi Hoffmaster, Fritz Horstman, Justin N. Kim, Mirena Kim, Matt Larson, Elena Lyakir, Sasha Lytvyn, Caleb Nussear, Anna Moser, Dora Somosi, Leigh Wells, Jean Wolff, Zarebinski
The artists utilized a huge variety of materials, including wool, velcro, paper, fabric, thread, silk, folded paper, and heavy paint to make viewers want to reach out and touch. The viewing experience was more akin to a comfortable home environment inside and outside.
