Art in the Yard: Women Artists Breaking Out
JUNE 4–6, 2021
Art in the Yard: Women Artists Breaking Out, was a comprehensive exhibition showcasing the work of 18 leading female artists and photographers (and over 100 works of art on view). The exhibition offered a timely response to issues of our time by museum-quality artists and allows visitors to see work in a Covid-safe, intimate outdoor setting. BAM Art Advisory collaborated with SMA I Stephen Moser Architects on the design of the tented exhibition space. The 18 artists’ work was displayed on free-standing walls that fan out beneath the large tent and extend into the yard. The simple, white box-like walls, designed by SMA, “break out” from the protected interior space into the open green lawn, creating a sense of permeability between built structure and organic landscape, as well as a Covid-safe environment. Some walls, as they approach the periphery, are cut down or flipped over to make tables and benches.
Presenting a show in a traditional format seems short-sighted and limiting. I’m hopeful that Art in the Yard: Women Artists Breaking Out creates a new paradigm and provides a platform that challenges the norms and overrides barriers. Also, I was inspired to bring art to Larchmont so that residents can experience new work and culture here and see and form new connections.” Featured artists in the exhibition include:
Anna Moser, Bethany Czarnecki, Catherine Haggarty, Catherine Howe , Dannielle Tegeder, Dora Somosi, Elena Lyakir, Elizabeth Gilfilen, Frances Ashforth, Heidi Pollard, Jean Wolff, Jill Moser, Joy Moser, Ky Anderson, Laura Sallade, Leah Tacha, Leigh Suggs, and Sandra Wong Geroux.
